Mongolian Quilting Center

Product development, project writing.

Local market development through product design and exhibition design.

The Mongolian Quilting Center (MQC) is a social initiative created to contribute to the economic development of poor, disabled, unemployed women and orphans through technical training and production of handmade patchwork and quilted items.  Selenge Tserendash, founded the Center fifteen years ago looking for developing economic opportunities through the use of the scraps from silk fabrics as raw materials.

The strong campaign of international networking to find quilters for training and donations to purchase a facility, paid off and the non-profit NGO “Shine Zamnal” (New Way Life) became Mongolian Quilting Center and has brought technical training to almost 2,000 women in Ulaanbaatar and rural areas of Mongolia.

Daniela met Selenge during their international fellowship “Leaders for a changing world” in Columbia University in New York in 2012 as representatives of their non-profit organizations. They developed an idea for a new Project and MQC invited Daniela to work in Ulaanbaatar in 2017.

The designs were developed based in the more contemporary and fashionable lines for women, Daniela created new concepts for new products that could reach a higher mark-up and higher perceived value.

MQC have developed lines of product inspired in its rich culture of equestrian traditions, unique aesthetics and nomad/country living. The traditional hairstyle of women is present in their products and was included in the graphic design for the new project presentations.

A training program took place in Uggy Lake, some hours away from Ulaanbaatar, where nearly 20 ladies were trained in the handmade embroidered products inspired in some lines Daniela brought from Bolivia adapted and culturally inspired by Mongolia.

Daniela redesigned the MQC shop inspired by the palette of color of the silk textiles used for the quilting and the construction elements of the gers as wood lattice.  The visual impact was given by the color of the walls and the decoration and setup of the products.
